Catamounts Celebrate Home Victory with 7-4 Win Over LIU
Burlington, Vt. – The University of Vermont Catamounts delivered an exhilarating performance on Saturday night, defeating Long Island University (LIU) 7-4 in their final home game of 2024 at Gutterson Fieldhouse. This win improves Vermont’s record to 4-8-3 (3-4-2 HEA), marking a significant milestone with 15 players contributing to the score sheet.
LIU kicked off the scoring just 5:22 into the match with Carter Rapalje’s shorthanded goal, but Vermont quickly retaliated. Jax Wismer netted his first collegiate goal, leveling the score 1-1, followed by a short-handed goal from Will Zapernick, giving the Catamounts a 2-1 advantage. Vermont extended their lead to 3-1 with a striking shot from Thomas Sinclair before LIU’s Austin Brimmer brought them back within one just before the first period ended.
The second frame saw LIU’s Brimmer tie the game at 3-3. However, Vermont regained momentum with goals from Timofei Spitserov and Isak Walther, maintaining a 5-3 lead. The Catamounts boosted their offense with a power-play goal by Colin Kessler, pushing the score to 6-3. Sinclair capped the game with an empty-net goal, sealing the 7-4 victory.
Sinclair’s performance marked his first multi-goal game, contributing to a balanced offensive effort. Additionally, Keenan Rancier secured his first win of the season in goal, making 15 saves. The Catamounts will head to Schenectady, N.Y., for a series against Union next weekend, set to air live on ESPN+ and WVMT.
With this victory, Community Bank N.A. will donate $525 to Special Olympics Vermont as part of their initiative to support local charities with every goal scored. Fans are encouraged to follow @UVMmhockey for updates and news on the team’s journey.
