A pair of ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in “The Wizard of Oz” sold at auction for $32.5 million, becoming the most valuable movie memorabilia ever sold. The shoes, one of four surviving pairs from the movie, were stolen from a museum but recovered by the FBI in 2018. The auction also included the Wicked Witch’s hat, which sold for $2.9 million. The shoes were famously stolen in 2005 by Terry Jon Martin but recovered in a sting operation in 2018. Martin confessed to the crime and was sentenced to time served due to poor health. Minnesota lawmakers and the Judy Garland Museum tried to win back the shoes but were unsuccessful. The auction broke records, totaling nearly $40 million, and helped Heritage Auctions set a new record for an entertainment auction. The bidder for the ruby slippers remains anonymous, and their star power likely contributed to the high selling price.
