Murder Trial of New Hampshire Man Begins in Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. — The murder trial of Joseph Ferlazzo, a New Hampshire man accused of killing and dismembering his wife, Emily Jean, in 2021, commenced Friday with jury selection and opening statements. The proceedings unfolded in Burlington, where a jury was sworn in to hear the case against Ferlazzo, who was on vacation in Vermont with his wife at the time of the alleged crime.

During the opening statements, Ferlazzo’s defense attorney, Margaret Jansch, argued that her client was acting in self-defense, claiming he believed his life was in danger from his wife, suggesting that he feared she was going to shoot him. In contrast, the prosecution argued that the murder was both intentional and premeditated, asserting the gravity of the charge against him.

Witnesses called to testify included family members of both the victim and the defendant. Notably, Jean’s mother recounted her distress upon realizing her daughter was missing when Ferlazzo returned home alone to New Hampshire. Additionally, law enforcement officials from the Vermont State Police provided insights into the investigation, detailing the early stages of the case.

The trial’s first day concluded with the prosecution presenting a damning piece of evidence: a video recording in which Ferlazzo confessed to killing his wife during an interrogation. Despite this confession, he has pleaded not guilty to a first-degree murder charge.

The trial is set to resume on Monday at 8:30 a.m., as both sides prepare to present further evidence and witness testimonies in this high-profile case that has captured the community’s attention.
