Pitt Panthers Men’s Soccer Season Ends in Elite Eight Loss to Vermont
PITTSBURGH – The Pitt Panthers men’s soccer team faced a challenging matchup in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, ultimately falling to the Vermont Catamounts 2-0 and concluding their season. The Panthers advanced to this stage after impressive victories against Cornell in the Second Round and Kansas City in the Round of 16. This marks the fourth appearance in the Elite Eight for Pitt in the last five seasons.
Junior defender Jackson Gilman returned to the lineup after serving a suspension and started at right-back, with Casper Svendby shifting to a forward position. Despite dominating possession and having seven shots compared to Vermont’s three in the first half, Pitt could not break the deadlock before the halftime whistle.
The game took a turn in the 51st minute when a defensive miscue allowed Vermont junior forward Maximillian Kissel to capitalize, sliding the ball past Pitt goalkeeper Cabral Carter for a 1-0 lead. The Panthers pushed hard for an equalizer, with notable chances from Svendby, Arnau Vilamitjana, and Guilherme Feitosa, but were thwarted by Vermont’s goalkeeper, Niklas Herceg.
With the match heading into the final moments, Pitt’s hopes were dashed when a costly mistake by Carter led to a second goal from Vermont’s Yaniv Bazini, sealing the victory with just 10 seconds left on the clock. The Panthers concluded their season with a strong record of 14 wins and six losses, setting their sights on future endeavors.
