LIU Sharks Defeat Vermont Catamounts 3-2 in Thrilling Non-Conference Matchup
BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Long Island University Sharks extended their remarkable start to the season, improving to 8-5-1, with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Vermont Catamounts (3-8-3) on Friday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The match showcased competitive play as Onni Leppänen snapped a 1-1 tie just over a minute into the third period.
The Sharks opened the scoring early in the first period with a power play goal from Josh Zary, his opportunistic tap-in following a blocked shot setting the tone. The Catamounts responded with a goal from Luca Münzenberger in the second period, leveling the score with a well-placed wrist shot amidst traffic in front of LIU’s goal.
Leppänen’s decisive goal came as he pounced on a rebound from Riley Wallack’s shot, giving LIU a 2-1 lead. In a desperate move, Vermont pulled their goalie late in the game. Connor Gregga’s faceoff win led to a clearing attempt that unexpectedly found the back of the net, putting Vermont within one goal with just over two minutes remaining.
Max Strand managed to score for Vermont with only a minute left, once again narrowing the gap. Despite a strong offensive effort that included 14 shots in the final period, the Catamounts couldn’t secure an equalizer.
Head Coach Stephen Wiedler emphasized the need for his team to tighten their defensive play and capitalize on scoring chances. The two teams will face off again on Saturday night, sponsored by Vermont Construction Company, with several giveaways for fans.
The game will be broadcast live on ESPN+ and local radio WVMT, allowing fans to follow the action as the season progresses.
