Montpelier’s Federal Building to Be Disposed By GSA, Sanders Calls for Support
Montpelier, VT – In a surprising announcement this week, the Government Services Agency (GSA) revealed plans to dispose of the federal building at 87 State Street, which was severely damaged during the July 2023 flooding. The facility previously housed several key federal operations, including the U.S. Post Office, Courthouse, Department of Agriculture, Small Business Administration, and Internal Revenue Service, serving as a vital hub for the Montpelier community and central Vermont.
Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) expressed outrage at the GSA’s decision, highlighting the lack of communication with local residents and Vermont’s congressional delegation throughout the 17-month deliberation process. “This decision to shutter the federal building in Montpelier is nothing short of outrageous,” Sanders stated. He criticized the GSA for abandoning a crucial community resource instead of taking prompt action to repair and restore it.
Sanders emphasized the importance of ongoing federal support for Montpelier, particularly in light of the community’s struggle to recover from the recent floods. “The decision to walk away from this building may be final, but it must not mean the end of federal support for Montpelier,” he asserted. The senator urged the GSA to expedite the transfer of the property at no cost for public benefit and called on the U.S. Postal Service to commit to reopening a full-service facility in downtown Montpelier.
