As the 2024 election approaches, some Vermonters are taking their activism beyond state lines to swing states where their efforts may have a bigger impact. With Vermont being a reliably blue state, many residents are traveling to battleground states like Pennsylvania and Wisconsin to canvass for Democratic candidates, including Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.
Amy Shollenberger, a veteran Statehouse lobbyist, led a group of Vermonters to Wisconsin to knock on doors and drum up support for Democratic candidates. Elizabeth Allen-Pennebaker also traveled to Pennsylvania’s Lehigh Valley to canvass for Harris and Walz, emphasizing the importance of making a difference in key swing states.
Vermont has historically shown strong support for Democratic candidates, with a majority of donations going to federal Democrats over Republicans. Even residents with the deepest pockets are contributing to Democratic candidates in larger, more competitive states like Michigan, Arizona, and North Carolina.
Some Vermont Republicans are focusing more on local races rather than federal ones, and the state GOP chair, Paul Dame, mentioned that he is not aware of any local Republicans traveling out of state to canvass. On the other hand, Democratic candidates like state Rep. Kathleen James are actively participating in out-of-state campaign efforts to support left-leaning candidates in competitive areas.
These Vermonters are getting involved in national politics through nonprofits like Seed the Vote, which recruit volunteers to canvass for Democratic candidates in battleground states. Despite being a small state, Vermonters are finding various ways to make a difference in elections beyond their borders.
