Ilona Maher Joins Bristol Bears as Rugby Star Makes UK Debut
BRISTOL, England (AP) — Ilona Maher, an Olympic bronze medalist and popular social media figure, is set to make waves in the rugby world as she joins the Bristol Bears women’s team. Maher, who boasts nearly 8 million followers on Instagram and TikTok, will be officially unveiled to fans this Saturday ahead of her debut match on January 5 against Gloucester-Hartpury.
The 28-year-old Vermont native, known for her exploits in rugby sevens, signed a three-month contract with the Bears and expressed her excitement about the move. "I am thrilled to join the Bristol Bears and position myself to earn a place on the USA team for the 2025 Rugby World Cup," Maher stated in the club’s announcement.
Her signing has already had an impact, prompting the Bears to relocate the upcoming match to Ashton Gate due to "unprecedented demand," with ticket sales exceeding 1,000. Additionally, Maher will engage fans in a Q&A session before the match, emphasizing her status as a leading figure in the sport.
Bears head coach Dave Ward praised Maher’s potential, stating, "Her ability with the ball will add a new dimension to our attack." Maher, who has made a name in both rugby and reality TV—finishing as a runner-up on "Dancing With The Stars"—is making the transition from sevens to the 15-a-side game.
Ward called Maher’s arrival a "huge coup" for the team, noting her significant influence both on and off the field. As she prepares for her new role with the Bears, all eyes will be on Maher and her journey in the UK rugby scene.
