The Republican National Committee recently filed a lawsuit to ensure that only citizens can vote in municipal elections in Burlington, Vermont. While noncitizen suffrage is illegal in federal-level elections, some municipalities like Winooski, Vermont, and Takoma Park, Maryland, allow noncitizens to vote in local races. Takoma Park has had a policy permitting noncitizen voting for 30 years, with 20% of noncitizens voting in the 2017 off-year elections.
In contrast, states like Florida and Alabama have passed state constitutional amendments declaring that only citizens can vote.
