Nevermore Bookstore Celebrates a Decade of Literary Impact in Newport
NEWPORT — Nevermore Bookstore celebrated its 10th anniversary on Monday evening, marking a significant milestone in the community’s creative scene. Founded by Larry Bradley in 2014, the store has evolved into a hub for writers and literary enthusiasts, fostering connections and creativity among patrons.
“I really thought it was going to be a bust,” Bradley candidly shared during the event, expressing gratitude for the turnout of writers and loyal customers. With a degree in English from the University of Pittsburgh and a background in mental health, Bradley embarked on the bookstore journey with trepidation but a clear vision.
In 2016, he initiated a writing group that meets weekly, which has attracted around 15 dedicated participants over the years. “There’s a lot of creativity in the area,” Bradley said, highlighting his commitment to nurturing local talent and inviting aspiring writers to join.
Nevermore’s influence extends beyond Newport, as Bradley has spearheaded a mobile library initiative in Nicaragua over the past four years, sending books to underserved communities and promoting the power of literature globally.
The anniversary celebration featured refreshments, poetry readings from Bradley, and special promotions, including $10 gift certificates for every $50 spent. Reflecting on the store’s significance, Bradley offered an open invitation to newcomers: “I think there’s enough in here that somebody could find something that they like.”
With a passionate commitment to Newport and its literary culture, Bradley humorously noted, “I’m not going anywhere unless they give me the boot.” His vision has firmly established Nevermore as a beloved cultural fixture in Newport, thriving for the past decade.
