Former ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski was diagnosed with prostate cancer in March, just a few months before his unexpected retirement from the network. In a recent Sports Illustrated profile, Wojnarowski revealed that his retirement statement in September was referencing his cancer diagnosis, stating that “time isn’t in endless supply.” The 55-year-old received the news after a physical revealed an elevated PSA and a biopsy confirmed early-stage cancer, which he learned of just minutes before going on air for “NBA Countdown.”
Despite the diagnosis, Wojnarowski’s prognosis is good as prostate cancer tends to stay confined to the prostate and is typically slow-growing. He is currently on active surveillance and has been advised to improve his lifestyle habits. While surgery is an option, Wojnarowski may only consider it if he cannot mentally cope with having the cancer inside him. His retirement, however, was not directly tied to his diagnosis, as he expressed a desire to no longer be tied to the demands of reporting for ESPN.
Wojnarowski has since taken a significant pay cut to join his alma mater, St. Bonaventure, as the general manager of the men’s basketball program. Despite leaving behind a lucrative salary at ESPN, he felt compelled to make the switch for his family’s sake. Wojnarowski emphasized the importance of family and close friends in the end, acknowledging that the work he did at ESPN will eventually be forgotten. ESPN has since hired Shams Charania as its new NBA insider, replacing Wojnarowski.
