Navy reports: Two USS George Washington sailors pass away within days of each other upon arrival in Japan

[ad_1]
Two sailors assigned to the USS George Washington died within days of each other shortly after the aircraft carrier arrived in Japan. The causes of death are unclear, and both cases are under investigation by Japanese authorities and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS). Cuyler Condon was found unresponsive in an on-base hotel, while Dimitri Morales was found unresponsive in town. The Navy has not shared any information with Morales’ family, who are waiting for answers and do not believe he died by suicide. The Navy is providing grief counseling and support services to sailors on the ship as they transition to Japan. The USS George Washington previously experienced a spike in suicides while undergoing an overhaul in Virginia from 2017 to 2023, prompting investigations and the relocation of sailors. The aircraft carrier completed its overhaul in May 2023 and arrived in Japan in October to replace the USS Ronald Reagan. Captain Timothy Waits praised the crew for meeting all goals and expectations upon arrival in Japan. For those in crisis, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline can be reached at 988, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255, or by texting HOME to 741741.
