The CEO of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, was fatally shot outside the Hilton hotel in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday morning. Thompson, 50, was shot in the chest and leg by a suspect wearing a black hoodie and carrying a grey backpack, who used a firearm with a silencer. Thompson was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai West, and as of Wednesday morning, no arrests had been made. The parent company, UnitedHealth Group, was holding its annual investor conference in New York City but ended it abruptly due to a “very serious medical situation” with a team member.
Thompson became CEO of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021, after joining UnitedHealth Group in 2004. He previously served as CEO of UnitedHealthcare government programs, including Medicare & Retirement and Community & State. The shooting was first reported by the New York Post, and a food cart vendor near the scene did not hear any gunshots but saw heavy police presence. This is a developing story, with updates to follow as more information becomes available.
