In the recent election in Vermont, the state’s attorney general, secretary of state, treasurer, and auditor of accounts were reelected by comfortable margins. Incumbent Democrats and one Democrat/Progressive were sent back to office. Attorney General Charity Clark, Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas, Treasurer Mike Pieciak, and Auditor Doug Hoffer all secured victories with no competitive challenges.
One race that appeared uncertain was for lieutenant governor, as incumbent David Zuckerman faced a strong challenge from Republican John Rodgers. Governor Phil Scott easily defeated Democratic nominee Esther Charlestin. Attorney General Charity Clark won with 54.1% of the vote, while Secretary of State Sarah Copeland Hanzas led with 55.33%. Treasurer Mike Pieciak was also reelected with 56.19% of the votes, and Auditor Doug Hoffer secured 55.87% of the votes.
Clark has overseen lawsuits against corporations harming Vermonters, while Pieciak has worked to stabilize the pension system and implement a “baby bonds” pilot program. Copeland Hanzas focused on the integrity of Vermont’s voting system, while Hoffer conducted audits on state programs. These re-elections mark a continued trust in the incumbents to lead Vermont effectively. Republican nominee Joshua Bechhoefer, challenging Pieciak, criticized the state’s spending but was defeated in the election.
Overall, the results show a strong mandate from Vermont voters for the incumbent Democrats and Democrat/Progressive to continue their work in the state’s top offices.
