BURLINGTON, VT — The M&T Bank Vermont City Marathon & Relay, produced by RunVT, will celebrate its 36th edition on May 25, 2025, attracting over 5,000 participants to Burlington. This renowned event not only promotes local running culture but also serves as a qualifying race for the prestigious Boston Marathon.
While the full marathon remains the centerpiece, the event boasts a 2-person and a 3-5 person relay, ensuring inclusivity for those who prefer shorter distances. Registrations are now open for aspiring runners, with demand expected to soar, given the event’s esteemed recognition. Runner’s World Magazine has ranked it among the "20 Best Marathons" in the U.S., and it holds the distinction of being the first marathon in the country to include a relay.
Local runners Shari Bashaw and Brett Patnaude shared their experiences, praising the event’s community spirit and course design. Bashaw, who has participated in nearly all the marathons, emphasized the event’s supportive atmosphere and runner safety initiatives. Patnaude, preparing for his third race, highlighted the camaraderie and excitement of live music along the course, which contributes to the race experience.
RunVT Executive Director Anthea Dexter-Cooper, a lifelong runner, aims to further cultivate the running community through the marathon. She described her vision of making the event welcoming for families and volunteers alike, emphasizing the holistic experience of running beyond mere competition.
Since its inception in 1989, the Vermont City Marathon has grown significantly, appealing to runners across various skill levels. This year’s race will continue to showcase the beauty of Burlington while fostering a passion for running within its community.
