The E. coli outbreak linked to slivered onions on McDonald’s Quarter Pounder hamburgers has ended, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A total of 104 cases in 14 states were identified, resulting in 34 hospitalizations and one death in Colorado. California-based Taylor Farms distributed the onions linked to the outbreak, which were served at McDonald’s restaurants in several states. Quarter Pounders were pulled from restaurants in the 14 states when the outbreak was announced in October. At least four people developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious illness that can lead to kidney failure.
Investigators were able to link the illnesses to Quarter Pounders by interviewing those who fell ill. The majority of those interviewed had eaten at McDonald’s and had consumed food with fresh, slivered onions, which are only found in the Quarter Pounder. A quick recall of the onions by the FDA helped resolve the outbreak, and there is no longer a food safety concern related to this specific outbreak. The CDC has deemed the outbreak over, and the FDA’s investigation is now closed. It is important to note that while many strains of E. coli bacteria are harmless, certain strains can cause serious gastrointestinal issues when consumed via contaminated food or water.
