One of the remaining co-defendants in Georgia’s longest-running criminal trial, Deamonte Kendrick, also known as Yak Gotti, was stabbed in jail while jurors were deliberating in the racketeering case involving rap superstar Young Thug. Kendrick’s lawyer, Douglas Weinstein, confirmed the incident and stated that Kendrick is expected to make a full recovery. The circumstances of the stabbing and the extent of Kendrick’s injuries were not immediately known. The Fulton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident to determine if charges will be pending.
The Fulton County Jail, where the stabbing took place, is part of a federal investigation into poor living conditions and violence. Last year alone, there were more than 300 stabbings involving contraband and makeshift weapons. The trial against Kendrick and co-defendant Shannon Stillwell began in January 2023, but faced delays and unexpected turns when several defendants took plea deals and others chose to be tried separately from Young Thug.
The proceedings, which have been livestreamed, have featured the use of Young Thug’s song lyrics by prosecutors to claim violence and illegal acts. The trial has had bizarre moments involving drug exchanges, uncooperative witnesses, and combative incidents with the previous judge. Young Thug and four other co-defendants entered into plea agreements, with Young Thug’s sentence commuted to time served and 15 years of probation. The trial is considered Georgia’s longest criminal trial, surpassing a previous case involving Atlanta public school educators accused of racketeering in a cheating scandal.
