Northeast Kingdom Sees Significant Developments in Community Infrastructure and Resources
Dec 2024 – Northeast Kingdom, VT – Positive changes are unfolding in the Northeast Kingdom as communities like Groton and South Ryegate are set to receive transformative fiber broadband access thanks to a $2.8 million USDA Community Connect Grant. This funding will create a community HUB and provide local libraries and the Groton Nature Center with essential equipment and Wi-Fi hotspots, addressing critical communication gaps in the area.
On Dec. 10, a public meeting at the Gateway Center in Newport will gather feedback on proposed amendments to regulations governing wakesports on several lakes, a timely discussion for local residents and officials. In addition, NVDA will host a virtual training session on climate vulnerabilities on Dec. 5, equipping communities to better navigate environmental challenges.
The Climate Economy Resilient Communities program is actively seeking applications to support local climate action initiatives, with rolling submissions accepted until Jan. 7. Similarly, the VT Municipal Energy Resilience Program has awarded over $11.4 million to 38 Northeast Kingdom communities for energy efficiency efforts, enhancing both comfort and operational cost savings in municipal buildings.
The Vermont Secretary of State’s Office is set to launch an upgraded Online Business Filing system on Dec. 16. Meanwhile, funding opportunities abound, including grants for firefighter resources, transportation programs, and renewable energy initiatives, all geared towards mobilizing community resilience and economic growth.
