Vermont AOT Awards $1.3 Million in Grants to Enhance Transportation Innovation
The Vermont Agency of Transportation (AOT) has announced the allocation of $1.3 million in grants under its Mobility and Transportation Innovation (MTI) program, a key initiative aimed at improving transportation access for rural Vermonters while simultaneously addressing environmental concerns. Public Transit Manager Ross MacDonald emphasized the importance of these innovative strategies, stating, “Innovation like this is essential to meet the transportation needs of Vermont’s rural population and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”
The MTI program was established following the passage of the 2020 Transportation Bill (Act 121) and serves to foster creative solutions that bolster mobility for transit-dependent residents, minimize reliance on single-occupancy vehicles, and cut greenhouse gas emissions. This year, the AOT received 21 proposals and granted funding to 14 projects, demonstrating strong community interest in improving Vermont’s transportation landscape.
The awarded grants will finance a variety of initiatives, including the extension of existing Transportation Demand Management (TDM) programs, investments in electric bicycles, and the introduction of new services such as microtransit and car sharing. Additionally, resources will be developed to promote carpooling and vanpooling, specifically aimed at aiding local businesses in adopting more sustainable commuting practices.
