East Burke Reopens Snowmobile Bridge After July Floods
EAST BURKE, Vt. (WCAX) – The village of East Burke rejoiced as it welcomed the restoration of its vital snowmobile bridge, which was severely damaged during the destructive floods of July 2024. After extensive repairs and community fundraising, the bridge is set to reopen in the coming weeks.
Local residents and snowmobiling enthusiasts raised an impressive $20,000 to support the reconstruction efforts necessary to restore the bridge. The structure is an integral part of Kingdom Trails, attracting both local and visiting snowmobilers year-round. It also serves as a crucial pathway for residents to access schools and local businesses without having to navigate the busy Route 114, often filled with logging trucks.
Jim Sullivan, the Burke Town Administrator, emphasized the bridge’s importance not just for snowmobilers but as a vital safety feature for the community. "It keeps the snowmobiles off of Route 114, allowing our kids to walk safely to school or head down to the store," Sullivan remarked.
Local businesses surrounding the bridge have expressed their excitement at its return, anticipating an uptick in visitors and economic activity due to the bridge’s reopening. With the completion of stabilization efforts, it is expected that the bridge will be fully accessible to the public shortly.
The successful restoration of the snowmobile bridge signifies not just resilience in the face of natural disasters but also a strong sense of community and collaboration among the residents of East Burke. As they gear up for the winter season, the bridge stands as a testament to the community’s dedication and collective spirit.
