Cora Ball: A Revolutionary Solution to Microfiber Pollution
Morrisville, VT – Cora Ball is on a mission to protect our oceans and waterways, but instead of traditional methods like reusable bags, they focus on a new approach: preventing microfiber pollution from our clothing. Founder Rachael Miller uncovered the environmental hazards of microfibers while reading a science magazine in 2013, leading her to establish the nonprofit Rozalia Project, which addresses marine debris.
Miller’s research revealed that microplastics and microfibers can have severe consequences on aquatic life, causing physical harm and even mortality in marine creatures who ingest them. This insight sparked her determination to combat the problem at its source. Identifying that washing machines were significant contributors to microfiber pollution, Miller and her team created the Cora Ball, inspired by coral structure.
Manufactured using zero-waste processes in Williamstown and assembled in Morrisville, the Cora Ball is designed to catch microfibers during laundry cycles. Users simply toss it into the washing machine, where it effectively collects between 26% and 31% of microfibers before they enter wastewater.
After seven years in action, over 100,000 Cora Balls are now used in 62 countries, generating a meaningful impact on ocean health. Miller emphasizes the importance of collective action, noting that “so many people are willing to take that step to protect [the oceans]” gives her team immense motivation.
Looking ahead, Cora Ball’s efforts will extend beyond the laundry room, with new initiatives aimed at tackling microplastics in kitchen environments. More about these innovations, including the upcoming “Cora Boards,” will be revealed on December 9 at 6 p.m.
For now, Cora Ball continues to change the game, one small laundry load at a time, all in the name of preserving our precious waterways.
