Springfield Community Players Seek Community Support for Urgent Roof Replacement
Springfield, Vt. – The Springfield Community Players, Vermont’s oldest continuously operating amateur theater group, urgently needs funding to replace the aging roof of their South Street studio. With the roof nearing 35 years old, the risk of leaks threatens the safety of their valuable collection of costumes and props from potential water and mold damage as winter approaches.
The nonprofit has managed to save approximately $32,500, but a total of $130,000 is required for the roof replacement. In light of this financial challenge, the Players have launched a GoFundMe campaign, appealing to the community for support. A failure to secure a reliable roof could force the theater group to relocate their extensive costume and prop collection, leading to increased costs and logistical complications for future rehearsals and performances.
Diverting funding from their production budget to address these urgent repairs could diminish the Players’ ability to provide affordable live theater experiences, particularly impacting local audiences that include many seniors who might not have alternative access to the arts.
For over a century, the Springfield Community Players have been a cornerstone of the local arts scene, welcoming new talents while nurturing aspiring directors and playwrights. Their recently concluded 2024 season featured productions such as Agatha Christie’s “The Unexpected Guest” and the musical “Godspell.”
The studio, which has served as the Players’ home since the 1980s, was originally built as a cafeteria for wartime factory workers and later transformed into a performance space that includes accessibility improvements for all patrons.
