Killington Kicks Off FIS World Cup with Thrilling Day One
KILLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) — The FIS World Cup skiing event kicked off in Killington, Vermont, drawing thousands of excited fans eager to witness elite athletes showcase their talents. Over 60 of the world’s top women skiers hit the slopes on the iconic Superstar trail for the Giant Slalom Race, creating an electric atmosphere that captivated spectators.
Jimmy Good from Pennsylvania expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Every race, we haven’t missed a race yet.” For many young aspirants like Sofia Murray from Canada, watching these athletes in action is deeply inspiring. “It’s really cool to see how much they progress… I try and watch how amazing they are and put it into my own skiing,” she noted.
However, the day was not without its setbacks, as two-time Olympic gold medalist Mikaela Shiffrin sustained injuries during her second run and was transported off the mountain for evaluation. Shiffrin, who was aiming for her 100th career World Cup victory, was not listed for the upcoming Slalom event, leaving fans heartbroken but hopeful for her return.
Among the fans, many are eagerly anticipating watching ski history unfold, with hopes of Shiffrin achieving her milestone at home. “We’re hoping for number 100,” said Good, with a fellow attendee from Maine expressing excitement to witness Shiffrin’s potential milestone in person.
The event has also showcased local talent, with University of Vermont graduate Paula Moltzan finishing strong in fifth place. Enthusiasts remarked on the festival-like atmosphere, with many describing it as the best skiing experience outside of Europe.
As the competition continues, fans are expected to flock to the slopes once again, with the Slalom event set to commence at 10 AM on Sunday.
