Jay Peak Kicks Off Ski Season with Thanksgiving Snowstorm
Jay Peak, VT (WCAX) – The Thanksgiving snowstorm brought a fresh blanket of snow to the region, marking the official start of the 2024 ski and ride season at Jay Peak. With snow guns roaring and several inches of powder from Mother Nature, skiers and snowboarders flocked to the slopes. "As a kid, that excitement when there’s fresh snow, it’s like Christmas morning," said Kevin Szych of Montgomery, who eagerly anticipated the season’s first turns.
The resort, which opened its lifts on Friday, had been eagerly awaiting colder weather, as many other ski areas were forced to delay their openings. Located in northern Vermont, Jay Peak attracts visitors from both the U.S. and Quebec, all ready to enjoy the winter wonderland. "It means happiness, authentic happiness; smiles on everyone’s faces," remarked Oaty O’Brien, who traveled seven hours from New Jersey to be part of the season’s kickoff.
As residents gather for Thanksgiving, the ski community is celebrating up to eight inches of fresh snow. "The whole state of Vermont benefited," said Steve Wright, Jay Peak’s general manager, emphasizing the enthusiasm generated by the natural snowfall.
Jay Peak is not only a key destination for winter sports but also serves as a major economic engine for Orleans County, offering amenities such as a conference center and water park. To navigate challenges posed by inflation, resort officials have frozen prices for season passes and lift tickets this year. This strategy appears to be effective, with a 25% rise in season pass-holders and a 20% increase in M4 Club Card holders thus far.
As Jay Peak anticipates approximately 1,000 visitors this weekend, they look forward to a promising and lengthy ski season ahead.
