Dr. Scott Gottlieb, the former FDA commissioner, raised concerns about Robert F. Kennedy Jr. being nominated as the Health Secretary, citing worries that his vaccine skepticism would lead to decreased vaccination rates and potential disease outbreaks. Gottlieb pointed out Kennedy’s history of spreading false information about vaccines causing autism and doubting the effectiveness of Covid vaccines. Kennedy has also faced backlash from Republican senators due to his controversial views on abortion. Despite this, Kennedy has stated that he would not ban vaccines and believes in informed choice for individuals. Gottlieb emphasized that Kennedy’s intentions could have serious implications for health policy in the U.S. and questioned whether people understand the extent of his agenda. Gottlieb also expressed confidence that President-elect Donald Trump does not share Kennedy’s beliefs and would not support policies that could lead to disease outbreaks. The Trump transition team did not immediately respond to Gottlieb’s remarks.
