As the libertarian political advocacy group Americans for Prosperity increases its presence in Vermont, the state’s Democratic Party has filed a complaint over the group’s advertising campaign against legislation aimed at reducing the use of fossil fuels for heating in buildings. Americans for Prosperity, founded by the Koch brothers, has deep ties to the oil and gas industry and is active in all 50 states.
The group launched a multi-thousand dollar ad campaign urging lawmakers to oppose Act 18, or the Affordable Heat Act, which aims to reduce fossil fuel emissions from heating homes and businesses. The Vermont Democratic Party filed a complaint regarding the group’s misleading advertising practices, alleging that they are not registered as a Vermont-based organization, despite using the name Americans for Prosperity-Vermont on mailers.
The clean heat standard, established in 2023, requires reconvening lawmakers to decide on its full implementation in 2025. Americans for Prosperity’s campaign encourages Vermonters to contact legislators and oppose the plan. The group has also expanded grassroots efforts in Vermont, with Ross Connolly as the Northeast region director. Tensions over education financing and tax proposals by Vermont’s Democratic supermajority have sparked responses from Americans for Prosperity, calling for a shift towards prosperity and transparency in governing.
Despite the controversy, Americans for Prosperity remains committed to holding lawmakers accountable and educating taxpayers on critical issues. Connolly’s statement emphasizes the group’s dedication to advocating for policies that impact Vermonters’ lives.
