Vermont Man Charged After Crashing into Police Cruiser on Thanksgiving
SUTTON, N.H. — A 22-year-old man from Shelburne, Vermont, is facing multiple charges following a Thanksgiving Day accident on Interstate 89 that involved a state police cruiser and a local fire chief’s pickup truck. Daniel Poroj has been summoned to appear in Hillsborough District Court on March 18, 2025. His charges include driving without a valid license, negligent driving, failure to register his vehicle, and violations of the Move Over law and speeding regulations.
The incidents occurred amid a Thanksgiving Day snowstorm that caused numerous weather-related accidents along I-89, specifically between Warner and Lebanon. At around 10:11 a.m., a state trooper responded to a vehicle that had gone off the road, utilizing a fully marked cruiser with activated emergency lights. An electronic messaging board also urged drivers to "Move Over."
While the trooper was assisting, Poroj’s 2009 Honda Accord lost traction on the slick road and struck the rear of the police cruiser, which was stationary with lights flashing. The impact propelled the Honda into the pickup truck of a fire chief who had arrived on the scene to assist.
Both Poroj and the unnamed trooper were treated for minor injuries at New London Hospital. State police highlighted the importance of adhering to "Move Over" laws, which require drivers to reduce speed and maintain safe distances from emergency vehicles. Fines for violations can be as high as $250 for repeat offenders.
The New Hampshire State Police continue to investigate the incident, emphasizing the need for driver caution under hazardous conditions. This story is developing, and updates will follow as details become available.
