Vermont Author Ellen Parent Launches Debut Novel “After the Fall” at Phoenix Books
On December 5, Vermont author Ellen Parent will introduce her debut novel, “After the Fall,” at Phoenix Books in Rutland. This young adult, post-apocalyptic story is set against the backdrop of a transformed Green Mountain State, where 15-year-old protagonist June embarks on a quest to find her mother, who vanished six years ago under mysterious circumstances.
Drawing inspiration from Vermont’s rich history and her own experiences growing up in Danby, Parent has crafted an intricate narrative that intertwines personal discovery with themes of climate change and societal collapse. As June navigates a futuristic Danby and the newly established “New Rutland,” she uncovers a sinister government plot far grander than her own family’s troubles.
In a recent interview, Parent emphasized her aim to address realistic apocalyptic themes by exploring potential future scenarios for Vermont, citing intensive research on climate change impacts over the next century. She noted that her vision of Vermont grapples with increased rainfall and environmental degradation, evoking real fears about the future.
Will Notte, manager at Phoenix Books, believes “After the Fall” will resonate with both genre fans and local readers. He expressed excitement about the book’s potential to draw in a wider audience, encouraging readers to explore narratives beyond their usual preferences. Notte also highlighted the importance of author events in fostering community connections among book lovers.
“After the Fall,” is now available at Phoenix Books and other retailers. Parent will host a book reading and signing event at Phoenix Books on December 5 at 6:30 p.m., marking a significant milestone in her literary journey.
