Mountain Top Inn Celebrates 60 Years of Cross-Country Skiing Excellence
Chittenden, VT – Nestled amidst breathtaking mountain views, the historic Mountain Top Inn is proudly celebrating its 60th anniversary as the oldest cross-country ski resort in the United States. Each winter, the resort attracts 5,000 to 7,000 enthusiasts, offering 60 kilometers of diverse trails for locals and visitors alike.
Originally an 1870s farm, Mountain Top transformed into an inn in the 1940s. After a devastating fire in 1977, the north end was rebuilt, reopening in 1980. That same year, the pioneering introduction of snowmaking technology allowed the resort to thrive, ensuring consistent conditions for skiing. Roger Hill, the current director and a lifelong skier from the resort’s youth programs, recalls the early days, “Alpine resorts were doing it; why couldn’t we?"
The resort’s offerings extend beyond skiing, including youth and adult programs, weddings, a gourmet restaurant, and outdoor activities like snowshoeing—a key feature that has maintained interest even during unpredictable snowfall periods. Hill acknowledges the challenges posed by climate change but emphasizes a strong commitment to adaptability.
In line with its anniversary celebrations, Mountain Top Inn is providing discounted season passes for just $60, encouraging locals to experience the joy of cross-country skiing. “If they ski three days, the season pass pays for itself,” Hill noted, further enhancing accessibility with deals on rentals and flexibility to switch between skiing and snowshoeing.
The facility also plans special events, such as Blue Cross Blue Shield’s “Snow Days” on January 11, offering complimentary tickets and rentals for all visitors. With a rich history and dedication to fostering a love of outdoor sports, Mountain Top Inn remains a cornerstone of the Chittenden community.
