Regions of Vermont Indulge in a Snowy Thanksgiving Feast

Heavy Snow Sets the Scene for Thanksgiving Festivities in Killington, Vt.

KILLINGTON, Vt. (WCAX) – This Thanksgiving, a heavy blanket of wet snow transformed Killington into a winter wonderland, welcoming skiers and World Cup fans alike. As locals and visitors alike embraced the conditions, many took to the slopes to burn off calories before their holiday feasts.

“It’s their backyard,” said Kasie Munson from Connecticut. “Anyone coming up here wants this. It’s a dream.” Despite the challenging travel conditions, locals like Klaus Weirether noted that slow driving was a small price to pay for an enjoyable holiday: “It doesn’t really change plans at all,” he explained.

Many snowboarders and skiers opted for slopes over the dinner table. Walter Perez from New York expressed gratitude for the snow, stating, “I’m thanking snow and nature and all the good things.” With only a handful of Northeast mountains open, Vermont was the clear choice for Perez, who had been longing for the snow that was absent from nearby ski resorts.

However, the heavy snowfall posed some challenges, including car accidents and downed power lines that temporarily closed West Hill Road. Residents experienced power outages, but the spirit remained high among those accustomed to such weather. “Snow never really puts a wrench in our plans,” Weirether added, emphasizing the festive outlook locals have during the holiday.

As anticipation builds for the FIS World Cup this weekend, all eyes will be on ski star Mikaela Shiffrin, a Burke Mountain Academy graduate aiming for her 100th World Cup victory. Despite the wintry conditions, the holiday spirit was alive in Killington, proving that for seasoned Vermonters, snow is simply part of the celebration.
