Press Release: SBA Vermont District Office Encourages Support for Local Small Businesses This Holiday Season
The U.S. Small Business Administration’s Vermont District Office, in partnership with Senator Peter Welch, is championing local small businesses this holiday season as part of the 15th anniversary of Small Business Saturday. With over 78,000 small enterprises fueling the Vermont economy and employing 60% of the state’s workforce, the SBA emphasizes the integral role these businesses play in communities across Vermont.
In a recent walking tour of Winooski, Director Darcy Carter and Senator Welch urged citizens to shop local, particularly during Small Business Saturday. “Small businesses are the heartbeat of our communities. Many in Winooski have faced challenges due to major construction, and this Saturday, we ask the community to support them by shopping, dining, and engaging with such businesses,” Carter stated.
The tour showcased prominent local businesses, including Golden Hour Gifts, a feel-good gift shop founded by Nicole Carey supporting local artists; Autumn Records, opened by passionate local musician Greg Davis; and Vermont Furniture Design, highlighting eco-friendly furniture crafted from sustainably harvested materials. Additionally, Muyisa Mutume’s M. Square African Food & Tropical Market, which sources specialty goods from eight countries, was featured in the day’s events.
As part of SBA’s "Season of Small Business," the organization encourages shoppers to participate in the local economy by sharing their experiences on social media with hashtags like #ShopSmall and #SmallBizSaturday. The initiative aims to bolster consumer spending at independently owned businesses, helping to reinforce local economies across the nation.
