Man accused of wrong-door shooting of Ralph Yarl faces trial for assault

The prosecution of an 86-year-old white man, Andrew Lester, charged in the wrong-door injury shooting of a Black teenager, Ralph Yarl, in Kansas City, Missouri, is moving forward. The mental evaluation of Lester, completed in September and entered into the record in November, has not delayed the trial scheduled to begin on February 18. Lester has pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree assault and armed criminal action. Yarl survived the shooting, which occurred when he rang Lester’s doorbell by mistake. The teenager was on his way to pick up his younger twin brothers but went to the wrong address. Lester, a retired aircraft mechanic, claimed he opened fire because he was scared and turned himself in a few days later.

The family of Ralph Yarl is grateful that the trial is progressing, seeing it as a step towards justice. The pretrial hearing was continued to January 25 at the request of Lester’s defense, citing good cause. Lester’s defense has raised concerns about potential jury bias due to publicity around the case, including comments from celebrities and discussions about racial motivation.

Ralph Yarl continues to cope with trauma from the shooting, expressing fears about potential danger. His family is committed to seeking fairness and ensuring that no family has to endure similar pain due to skin color. If Lester is convicted of assault, he could face life in prison, while the armed criminal action charge carries a potential sentence of 3 to 15 years.
