Press Release: Charges Filed Following Death of Dartmouth Student
Hanover, NH – In a significant development following the tragic death of Dartmouth College student Won Jang, two students and a sorority face misdemeanor charges related to the incident. The Hanover Police Department has charged 21-year-olds Matthew Catrambone and Samuel Terry, both members of the Beta Alpha Omega Fraternity, with providing alcohol to minors. Alpha Phi Sorority is also charged as a corporation for facilitating an underage drinking environment.
The investigation revealed that Jang attended an off-campus party hosted by Alpha Phi, where he and other underage attendees were consuming alcohol, supplied by legal-age fraternity members. Tragically, after the party, Jang and others went swimming in the Connecticut River, but following a sudden rain, participants left without realizing Jang was missing. Witnesses, including Jang’s family, confirmed that he could not swim. An autopsy later concluded that Jang died from drowning, with a blood alcohol level of .167, over twice the legal limit.
Police Chief Charlie Dennis emphasized that the incident could have been prevented, noting, "When you introduce alcohol, especially with individuals who cannot swim, poor decisions can occur." All involved parties are set to appear before a judge.
In response to the investigation’s findings, Dartmouth College suspended both Alpha Phi and Beta Alpha Omega, initiating an internal investigation. The college aims to uphold a safe and inclusive environment and has introduced new safety measures, including free swimming lessons and mandatory water safety training for incoming students.
Dartmouth’s leadership remains committed to fostering positive contributions from Greek organizations while ensuring the well-being of all community members. The situation underscores the ongoing need for responsible behavior related to alcohol consumption and safety protocols.
