Union Mutual’s Leader: Lisa Keysar Paving the Way for Women in Insurance
Montpelier, VT – Lisa L. Keysar, the newly appointed President and CEO of Union Mutual of Vermont, is making waves in a predominantly male insurance industry. Taking the helm in October 2020 after the sudden passing of Michael Nobles, she is the first female CEO in the company’s 150-year history, following in her father’s footsteps who led the firm from 1993 to 2001.
Keysar’s journey through Union Mutual began in 1995, where she held various roles, including overseeing customer support, underwriting, and marketing—providing her with a comprehensive understanding of the company and its operations. Today, she oversees Union Mutual, which predominantly sells property and casualty insurance across New England and New York, serving over 400 independent agencies.
With the industry experiencing shifts due to climate change and a heightened emphasis on employee well-being, Keysar prides herself on a management style defined by "radical candor," promoting open communication and empathy within the organization. She aims to maintain a collaborative environment, stating, "It’s about leading others to join you."
Union Mutual is currently in the process of affiliating with Norfolk & Dedham, an expansion that will enhance its financial strength and market reach while remaining a regional player. This transition under Keysar’s leadership promises growth in employee development opportunities as the insurance landscape continues to evolve.
As a trailblazer for women in business, Keysar emphasizes mentorship and inclusivity within the workforce, saying, “Women today comprise 50% of our executive team,” reflecting a significant shift in the industry’s traditionally male-dominated environment. Her leadership not only breaks barriers for women in the insurance sector but also signals a progressive and compassionate approach to corporate governance.
