President-elect Donald Trump has announced that his pick for attorney general is Pam Bondi, a former Florida attorney general. This decision came after former Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew from consideration. Trump praised Bondi’s work against drug trafficking and her involvement in combating the opioid crisis. Bondi currently works at a lobbying firm and would require Senate confirmation for the position.
Bondi has a history of supporting Trump, including participating in chants to “lock her up” aimed at Hillary Clinton during the 2016 Republican National Convention. She was also part of Trump’s defense team during his first impeachment trial. Bondi was involved in efforts to overturn the 2020 election results and falsely claimed that Trump had won Pennsylvania.
While Gaetz praised Trump’s selection of Bondi, he withdrew from consideration earlier in the day due to distractions surrounding his confirmation process. Gaetz faced allegations of having sex with a minor, which he has denied. Trump thanked Gaetz for his decision and said he has a bright future ahead.
As attorney general, Bondi would lead the Justice Department, which oversees agencies like the FBI, DEA, and Bureau of Prisons. Trump hopes that Bondi will refocus the DOJ on fighting crime and making America safe again. Bondi’s appointment will bring much-needed reforms to the department.
