A Boston man, Gregory Burnett, has been charged with assault and other crimes for violently attacking a transgender woman on a train at the Maverick train station last month. The victim, a 41-year-old woman, reported being punched and kicked while Burnett yelled derogatory terms at her related to her gender identity. The woman tried to defend herself, but Burnett allegedly pulled her leg causing her to fall and fracture her wrist. She believed she was targeted because of her gender identity. District Attorney Kevin Hayden condemned the attack and emphasized that everyone has the right to travel on public transportation in peace and safety. The attack occurred on a Blue Line train with the doors open, and Burnett allegedly approached the victim, shouting derogatory terms at her before physically assaulting her. Other passengers had to intervene to help the victim fend off Burnett. Police were able to identify Burnett as the attacker through witness descriptions and surveillance video. He was arrested on November 12 and charged with assault and battery causing serious bodily injury, assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and civil rights violation with injury. It is unclear if Burnett has retained an attorney.
