Wagner Achieves First Career Shutout in Women’s Hockey with 1-0 Victory Over Vermont

Union Women’s Ice Hockey Team Triumphs Over Vermont 1-0

BURLINGTON, Vt. – In a thrilling showdown at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Wednesday night, the Union women’s ice hockey team emerged victorious with a narrow 1-0 win against the University of Vermont. The decisive moment came from first-year forward Karianne Engelbert, who netted the only goal of the game, marking her 10th goal of the season. Sophomore goaltender Monja Wagner celebrated her first career shutout, making 28 crucial saves to keep the Garnet Chargers competitive throughout the match.

The first period saw Vermont come out strong with eight shots on goal compared to Union’s six. Despite having two prime two-on-one opportunities, Union could not find the back of the net, and the period concluded scoreless.

In the second period, Union picked up momentum, outshooting Vermont 14 to 9. Both teams had near chances, but outstanding performances from goalies Wagner and Vermont’s Jane Gervais kept the score level heading into the final period.

As the third period unfolded, Vermont intensified their efforts, outshooting Union 11 to 5. However, it was Engelbert’s decisive play that turned the tide. With just 2:20 left in regulation, she capitalized on a deflection from an attempted pass, skated in, avoided a defender, and launched a shot that found the top right corner of the net.

Wagner’s stellar performance in net was pivotal for Union, as the team looks to maintain their momentum. The Garnet Chargers will return to action on Tuesday, November 26, facing off against the Engineers of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in ECAC play, with puck drop scheduled for 11:00 AM.
