Union Secures Last-Minute Victory in Women’s Hockey Match Wednesday Night

Vermont Catamounts Fall to Union in Close Matchup

BURLINGTON, Vt. – In a hard-fought battle at Gutterson Fieldhouse, the Vermont Catamounts fell to the Union Garnet Chargers with a score of 1-0 on Wednesday evening. Despite outshooting Union 28 to 25, including a dominant 11 to 5 advantage in the third period, Vermont was unable to find the back of the net.

The game commenced with both teams struggling to score, ending the first period with the Catamounts leading in shots, 8-6. Vermont’s defense remained solid in the second frame, successfully killing off a power play by Union and showcasing strong goaltending from Jane Gervais, who blocked 14 shots in that period.

As the third period progressed, the Catamounts intensified their efforts, yet it was Union that ultimately broke the deadlock. With just 2:20 left on the clock, Karianne Engelbert capitalized on a defensive turnover, scoring the winning goal after evading defenders and slotting the puck into the back of the net. Maddie Leaney assisted on the play before the clock ran out on Vermont’s comeback efforts.

Following the game, Head Coach Jim Plumer expressed satisfaction with his team’s performance despite the loss. "We’re playing the way we want; creating chances and playing solid defense," he said. "The puck just isn’t going in for us right now. We’ll stick to our process and be ready for the upcoming games."

Next up, Vermont (3-9-2) will host the University of New Hampshire on Friday, November 22, at 6 p.m. The match will be part of the "Can for Coffee" Food Drive and will be streamed live on ESPN+. Fans can follow the UVM women’s hockey program on social media for updates.

The event is sponsored by the Windjammer Inn and Conference Center.
