In a thrilling match on Friday night, the Vermont Catamounts battled against the 12th-ranked Providence Friars in their Hockey East Opener at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The game ended with a final score of 3-2 in favor of Providence, with Nick Poisson scoring the game-winning goal in overtime. Simon Jellus of Vermont managed to score with just 40 seconds left in regulation to force the game into overtime.
Despite the loss, Vermont Head Coach Steve Wiedler praised his team’s effort and resilience, acknowledging the tough challenge of facing a nationally-ranked opponent. Joel Määttä and Massimo Lombardi’s performances stood out for the Catamounts, with Lombardi leading the team in points for the season with four.
The game was not without its intense moments, with both teams showing strong defensive efforts and several key saves by the goaltenders. The Catamounts managed to block 10 shots, with defenseman Sebastian Törnqvist leading the team with three blocks.
Community Bank N.A. will donate $150 to Special Olympics Vermont following the 3-2 decision, with the donation being part of an ongoing initiative tied to the men’s and women’s team’s performance this season.
