The Vermont Catamounts secured a 1-0 victory over the UConn Huskies in a thrilling match that extended their unbeaten streak to 10 matches. The sole goal came in the 84th minute from Yaniv Bazini, handing UConn their first defeat of the 2024 season. Head Coach Rob Dow praised his team’s performance, calling it their best 90-minute performance of the season.
The game saw several missed opportunities from both sides, with Bazini missing a diving header early in the match, and a penalty kick saved by the UConn goalie in the second half. The breakthrough came in the 84th minute when Nathan Simeon set up Bazini for the game-winning goal, earning the Catamounts a late 1-0 advantage.
First-year goaltender Niklas Herceg recorded his first career shutout, making three key saves to secure the win for Vermont. Bazini’s goal marked his fifth of the season, while Mike Bleeker registered his first assist. The victory also led to a donation from Vermont Mutual Insurance Group to the Vermont Children’s Trust Foundation as part of the Cats Win, Community Wins Initiative.
Following the win, the Catamounts will face NJIT on Sunday, Oct. 13 at Virtue Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m., with the game being broadcast live on ESPN+. The match will also be UVM’s annual Rally Around Mental Health match and presented by Redstone. Fans can follow @UVMmsoccer on social media for updates about the Vermont men’s soccer program.
