In response to the stress and anxiety surrounding the 2020 election, Erik Jacobs of Townshend organized a unique event to bring the community together. He planned a potluck dinner and square dance at Townshend Town Hall on election night. The idea was to foster unity and connection regardless of political differences, as Jacobs believed in the importance of knowing and supporting neighbors regardless of their voting choices.
The event marked the first time a square dance was held on election night in Townshend. While the town clerk, Ellenka Wilson, noted the strict rules about polling places, she fully supported the community-building event happening above her office. Over 100 people gathered for the potluck before hitting the dance floor, enjoying a distraction from the election chaos and finding solace in being together.
Attendees, including Democrats and Republicans, came together to laugh, dance, and share a meal, setting aside political divisions for the evening. Participants expressed a sense of relief and joy at being part of a larger community, even if just for a few hours. The event provided an opportunity to escape the stresses of the election and find solace in the unity and positivity of coming together as neighbors.
As the night came to a close, participants left feeling uplifted and grateful for the opportunity to bond with their community in a time of uncertainty and division. The event served as a reminder that, regardless of political beliefs, people can still come together to celebrate joy and humanity.
