BURLINGTON, Vt. – River Hawks Achieve Series Sweep with 3-0 Victory Over Vermont
The No. 15 UMass Lowell River Hawks ice hockey team secured a decisive 3-0 victory against Vermont on Saturday night, completing a series sweep at Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington. Graduate goaltender Henry Welsch (Lakeville, Minn.) shone in net, earning a 20-save shutout and improving his season record to 8-1-0. The River Hawks are now an impressive 5-0-0 on the road this season.
Three different players found the back of the net for the River Hawks, with junior Dillan Bentley (Peoria, Ill.), senior Matt Crasa (South Setauket, N.Y.), and junior Scout Truman (Lethbridge, Alberta) contributing goals. Bentley and Crasa accounted for two assists each, while junior TJ Schweighardt (Manahawkin, N.J.), freshman Libor Nemec (Bratislava, Slovakia), and sophomore Jak Vaarwerk (Clarence, N.Y.) added one assist apiece.
The River Hawks started strong, dominating puck possession in the first period. Crasa broke the deadlock with a goal late in the period, followed by Truman who scored just 40 seconds into the second period. Bentley’s goal in the third sealed Vermont’s fate, as UMass Lowell skillfully defended against the Catamounts’ attempts to rally.
Coach Norm Bazin praised his team’s performance, highlighting their resilience against a tough opponent and the importance of sweeps in Hockey East. "Henry stood tall in key moments, and the young guys are learning to compete in tight games," he stated.
UMass Lowell will return to action with a two-game home series against Connecticut on November 22 and 23 at the Tsongas Center, continuing their campaign as they aim for further victories this season.
