Press Release: Study Reveals Deadliest States for Halloween
As Halloween approaches, a new analysis by The Barber Law Firm highlights the states in the U.S. with the highest fatality rates from car accidents during this festive time. The study, which examined data from the Department of Transportation’s Fatality and Injury Reporting System Tool (FIRST) over a decade from 2013 to 2022, shows alarming statistics for road safety on Halloween.
Leading the rankings is South Dakota, which has a staggering 9.02 car crash deaths per one million residents—152.92% above the national average of 3.57 fatalities. Kentucky follows closely with 8.43 deaths per million, an increase of 136.38%. Mississippi ranks third with 6.75 deaths, 89.32% higher than the average.
Significantly, six out of the top ten deadliest states are located in the South. Other states that made the list include Arkansas, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
The research is a sobering reminder of the dangers that can arise during Halloween—a time meant for celebration and community bonding. To combat these alarming figures, experts emphasize the importance of responsible driving. Motorists are encouraged to reduce speed, remain alert, and avoid distractions, particularly in areas where children may be trick-or-treating.
Local authorities are also urged to enhance safety measures, such as improving street lighting and increasing police patrols, to create a safer environment for all.
In contrast, the safest states for Halloween include Vermont, Hawaii, and New York, boasting the lowest rates of fatal crashes, which fall well below the national average.
As the festive season nears, stakeholders aim to raise awareness about the importance of road safety to ensure a joyful, accident-free Halloween for everyone.
