High school athletes in Vermont have started practicing for the upcoming fall season, with football players from Brattleboro and Bellows Falls leading the charge. Brattleboro will be playing in Division I for the second consecutive year, looking to build on their 3-4-1 record from last season. Bellows Falls, on the other hand, went 4-4 during the 2023 regular season and reached the Division II semifinals.
The Vermont Principals’ Association announced several changes for the 2024-25 school year, including switching track and field from four divisions to three due to declining school enrollments. The girls’ and boys’ basketball tournaments will see changes as well, with dedicated semifinal nights for each division starting in 2025.
The Southern Vermont Decathlon saw Grace Tyrrell and Liam Evans take the top spots in the women’s and men’s events, respectively. Tyrrell set a new scoring record with 6,237 points in the women’s event, while Evans recorded 9,051 points in the men’s event.
The Tenney Field project at Brattleboro Union High School is currently in progress, with the first phase focusing on redoing the baseball infield. The second phase, which involves renovating the 77-year-old grandstand, may take longer to complete.
In the Brattleboro Senior Bowling League, Misguided remains in first place with one week left in the season. The league saw impressive performances from Carol Gloski, Kathy Wehner, John Walker, and Robert Rigby. Stayin’ Alive and Split Happens also put up strong showings in team competitions.
