UMass Lowell Shuts Out Vermont in Hockey East Matchup
BURLINGTON, Vt. – In a decisive Hockey East showdown on Saturday night, the No. 15 UMass Lowell River Hawks delivered a superb performance, defeating the Vermont Catamounts 3-0. Goaltender Henry Welsch was a standout, recording 20 saves and securing his fifth career shutout, helping UMass Lowell improve its season record to 8-2-0.
The River Hawks struck first late in the opening period. With just 4:47 left on the clock, an initial no-goal call was overturned after review, allowing Matt Crasa’s shot to count. UMass Lowell widened the lead early in the second period as Scout Truman netted his fifth goal of the season, capitalizing on a two-on-one breakaway just 40 seconds in. Dillan Bentley sealed the game with another goal at 11:26 in the third period, marking his fourth of the season.
Vermont’s penalty kill was noteworthy, successfully stifling all four of UMass Lowell’s power play attempts despite the River Hawks entering the game with the NCAA’s top-ranked power play. The Catamounts’ Connor MacKenzie made his collegiate debut, saving three shots in just over eight minutes of action. Nick Ahern led Vermont with four shots on goal.
Looking ahead, the Catamounts will face the No. 20-ranked UMass in a matinee on Sunday, November 24, at 3 p.m. The game will be broadcast live across multiple platforms including NESN and TSN+.
