UMass Lowell Ice Hockey Dominates Vermont with 5-2 Victory
BURLINGTON, Vt. – The UMass Lowell River Hawks (7-2-0, 3-1-0 Hockey East) displayed a strong performance against Vermont (2-5-3, 2-3-2 Hockey East), securing a 5-2 victory Friday evening at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The match featured contributions from five different goal scorers, highlighting the team’s offensive depth.
Senior Stefan Owens netted the game-winning goal—his first of the season—while freshman Mirko Buttazzoni also celebrated his first career goal, along with an assist. Junior Dillan Bentley, freshman Chris Delaney, and junior Scout Truman rounded out the scoring for the River Hawks. Notably, sophomore Girts Silkalns made an immediate impact by assisting in his season debut, and graduate students Nick Anderson and Ben Meehan extended their point streaks to six games with assists on the night.
Goalie Henry Welsch played a pivotal role, stopping 19 shots to improve his record to 7-1-0, while graduate student Jack Robilotti led the defense with two blocks. "It was a good effort tonight by all involved," said Head Coach Norm Bazin, praising the team’s ability to make strategic adjustments as the game progressed.
The River Hawks took control early, with Bentley scoring just 2:01 into the game. Although Vermont managed to equalize before the first intermission, UMass Lowell regained the lead in the second period with quick goals from Buttazzoni and Owens. The Catamounts fought back with a late second-period goal but couldn’t keep pace.
The River Hawks continued to apply pressure in the third, with Delaney extending the lead to 4-2. UMass Lowell’s solid defense and clutch saves from Welsch secured the victory. The two teams will face off again tomorrow night at 6:00 p.m. at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
