Vermont Falls to UMass Lowell in Hockey East Matchup
BURLINGTON, Vt. – In a competitive Hockey East clash on Friday night, the Vermont Catamounts dropped a 5-2 decision to the 15th-ranked UMass Lowell River Hawks. The game showcased impressive performances but ultimately highlighted Vermont’s ongoing struggles as they fell to a record of 2-5-3.
First-year forward Mirko Buttazzoni shone for UMass Lowell, contributing a goal and an assist, helping elevate the River Hawks to a 7-2-0 record. The River Hawks opened the scoring early in the first period with Dillan Bentley’s shot, quickly followed by Vermont’s equalizer from Will Zapernick thanks to a deft redirection from Timofei Spitserov.
The second period saw UMass Lowell regain control, with Buttazzoni scoring his first career goal on a breakaway, followed by a quick goal from Stefan Owens, pushing the lead to 3-1. Vermont fought back late in the period with a power-play goal from Simon Jellus, but UMass Lowell answered in the third with Chris Delaney’s goal, restoring the two-goal lead. Scott Truman sealed the victory with an insurance goal late in the game.
Vermont did manage to go three-for-three on the penalty kill against UMass Lowell’s previously dominant power play, emphasizing their defensive resilience. Notably, Community Bank N.A. will donate $150 to Special Olympics Vermont following the game, contributing $75 for each goal scored by the teams this season.
The Catamounts and River Hawks will meet again Saturday at 6 p.m. for the UVM Employee Appreciation Game, and fans are encouraged to bring donations of individually wrapped snacks for the school’s Care Closet.
