Vermont Fish and Wildlife Launches Operation Game Thief to Combat Poaching
Montpelier, VT — The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department is intensifying efforts to combat poaching and illegal hunting in the state through a program called Operation Game Thief. Sponsored by the Vermont Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs, this initiative encourages residents to report violations and offers cash rewards for tips leading to convictions.
Operation Game Thief operates on an entirely anonymous basis, allowing individuals to report illegal activities without fear of repercussions. Col. Justin Stedman from the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department noted that many complaints come from individuals inside family or friend circles, where fear of backlash might prevent them from coming forward.
The initiative aims to protect the state’s ecosystems by fostering community involvement, emphasizing that one does not need to be a hunter to participate. “If you enjoy seeing wildlife, you have a stake in ensuring ethical and legal hunting practices,” Stedman remarked.
In Vermont, certain animals have designated open hunting seasons, and violations include hunting or selling outside these timeframes, hunting without a permit, or using prohibited methods. Additionally, offenses such as trespassing, littering, theft, and property destruction are also breaches of wildlife law that citizens are encouraged to report.
Residents can call the 24-hour hotline at 1-800-752-5378 to report any suspicious activities. By taking part in Operation Game Thief, Vermonters contribute to the safeguarding of wildlife and the environment, helping to ensure that hunting and fishing practices remain sustainable and ethical.
