Vermont Catamounts Set to Host No. 15 UMass Lowell in Key Hockey East Matchups
The Vermont Catamounts men’s hockey team (2-4-3) is poised to extend their impressive six-game Hockey East point streak this weekend as they host No. 15 UMass Lowell (6-2-0) at Gutterson Fieldhouse. The two teams will compete on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 6 p.m., with both games available live on ESPN+ and WVMT.
Exciting events accompany the matches, beginning with the annual Can for Coffee Food Drive presented by Keurig Dr Pepper on Friday. Fans donating canned food will receive a box of Keurig K-Cup Pods and a chance to win a coffee brewer. Saturday’s game will recognize UVM staff and faculty with a free reserved ticket upon presenting a CATcard.
Highlighting the Catamounts’ performance, sophomore goaltender Axel Mangbo has secured the Hockey East Goaltender of the Week title for the second consecutive week, boasting two shutouts this season—the only goalie in the league with such a record. Further bolstering the team’s offense, first-year players have accounted for 38% of Vermont’s scoring, with Max Strand and Colin Kessler leading with eight points each.
Vermont’s special teams have been pivotal, ranking seventh in the NCAA with a 92.3% penalty kill and successfully converting a power play goal in each of the last four games.
The River Hawks, who have had a strong start this season compared to last year, present a significant challenge. They’ve excelled with the best power play in the NCAA at 45.8% and recently defeated a ranked opponent, signaling their competitive edge.
