St. Peter’s Basilica, one of the most iconic landmarks in Rome, is now offering visitors a new interactive exhibition at the top of its dome. The exhibition, part of the “Peter is Here” project, aims to showcase the uniqueness of the Basilica through a combination of history, art, and spirituality.
Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica, explained that the initiative uses digital technology to help modern audiences understand the profound significance of the Basilica. Additionally, a corresponding website offers a virtual tour of St. Peter’s, detailed explanations of its artistic elements, and practical information for visitors.
The website also provides real-time crowd flow information, sightseeing routes, and recommendations for an optimal visitor experience. Cardinal Gambetti emphasized that the content on the website is designed to cater to a diverse audience and inspire spiritual journeys.
The project, managed with the use of artificial intelligence and in collaboration with Microsoft, is considered one of the most technologically advanced of its kind. Over 400,000 detailed images of St. Peter’s were captured to create a digital twin of the Basilica, allowing for a precise reproduction of its architecture.
Overall, the new exhibition and website at St. Peter’s Basilica provide visitors with an innovative and immersive experience that combines technology with the rich history and spirituality of this renowned landmark.
